Our Team is full for this year's Turni
ng Wheels for Kids Bike Build
by Stephanie Mudgett

It’s that magical time of the year and Bike Build 2008 is almost upon us! In 2007, AVAC had a small team of staff members participate in Turning Wheels for Kids Bike Build. With our small team plus hundreds of additional volunteers, we helped build over 1,800 bikes in less than four hours. It was amazing to be one of 600+ people, all working with incredible holiday spirit, to help unload trucks, assemble bikes, check tire pressure, and organize bikes for distribution.
During the Build, we were treated to carols of the season and witnessed groups of children receive their new bicycles. I was thrilled to be asked to help an eight-year-old girl pick out her first bike. She said to me as we walked towards the sea of assembled bicycles, “I’m going to ride my new bike to school so I won’t ever be late again.” As she put her new helmet on and took her bike for a test ride, I smiled.
In 2008, Turning Wheels plans to assemble and distribute more than 2,000 bikes to underserved children in Santa Clara County.
This year's team is full! We have ten lucky AVAC people who will participate on December 13.  If you have any questions, or wish to find out how AVAC became involved with Turning Wheels, please contact me by email smudgett@avac.us or phone 408.445.4953.
