| AVAC Pro and Cardio Tennis Instructor Brett Sargeant mentioned that Al and Vida Echon, AVAC Tennis Members, had a compelling success story to tell. Would I be interested in hearing about it? “Of course”, I replied. So, I e-mailed Al Echon and received this inspiring response: Hi Jean, Got your email. Here is a summary of the ‘success’ Vida and I have had at AVAC. It begins about two years ago. I weighed in at 255 pounds. My doctor told me that I was becoming pre-diabetic and I needed to change my lifestyle. “This was enough to get me quickly the South Beach diet. My wife, Vida, who is my main support system, joined me and I dropped down to 220. I added a steady supply of USTA tennis and occasional workouts in the gym. But there was still one major source of my stress which played a major role in my weight gain – my job. I believe that job stress was a major cause of the fact that I weighed 235 in December 2007. However, this would soon change, as right after the holidays, the startup company I was with was sold. This meant that I could take a break for a while, get serious about my health, then look for a job. “I started a program of tennis twice a day, in the morning and after noon, plus a workout in the gym. I usually spent 30 to 35 minutes on the elliptical, then an hour lifting weights and stretching. “I've been an active tennis player since high school and I really wanted to get Vida engaged in the game. We thought Cardio Tennis at AVAC would fit the bill, so we started taking Saturday sessions with Brett. “These sessions were cool! Brett designed the sessions for couples. What’s more, cardio tennis was a great way to meet players at different levels, get a great sustained workout, and not get serious about keeping score. We enjoyed it immensely and met some great people. “I've since moved on. I joined a great company at the end of February, but we still maintain a daily schedule of either workouts or tennis. Just this last season, I was in AVAC’s 3.5A, 4.0C, and NetApp company team and am now captaining the AVAC 6.5 Men’s Combo team for the upcoming season. “About two months ago, Vida and I adopted veggie-only meals a couple of times a week and we feel great. So, seven months into my lifestyle-altering program, I have dropped to 197 pounds– just about the same weight I was when Vida and I were married 21 years ago. This is and down 58 pounds from two years ago. “My new goal is to get to down to my high school weight, 30 years ago, 180. I also want to add at least five more pounds of muscle. “I don’t want to be considered a “model case” as I am just a normal guy trying to be healthy so I can enjoy my family. I've seen a couple of other people on this journey that are really working hard to get in shape. If you think my story will help others, then I am all for it.” |
